International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers – Ceremony and Panel Discussion
On this International Day of UN Peacekeepers, UN Geneva wishes to honor the more than one million men and women who have served under the UN flag since the first deployment in 1948.
Come join us in the UN Memorial (Ariana Park) at the Palais des Nations on 31 May at 3:15 p.m. in order to pay tribute to the more than 3,500 peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the service of peace during that period.
It will also be a great occasion to discuss the future of peacekeeping missions: a panel discussion will be held under the theme “Investing in Peace around the World – Developing a culture of peace” at 3:45 p.m.
With the participation of:
- Mr. Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights
- Major General Kristin Lund, First woman to head a UN Peacekeeping force (Cyprus, 2014-2016)
- Ms. Marie Christine Lüssi Umuhoza, Saved by the Peacekeeper Captain Mbaye Diagne during the genocide in Rwanda
- Mr. Ahmad Fawzi, Chief Spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees
The event will be organized by the United Nations Information Service, in association with the Soldiers of Peace International Association and the Association du Captain Mbaye Diagne, the Senegalese peacekeeper credited with saving as many as 1,000 lives during the genocide in Rwanda and in whose name the Security Council created a medal for exceptional courage in 2014.
If you wish to attend the event and do not hold a UN badge, please send an email with your name to the following address : firstname.lastname@example.org.
